Netflix entered the market for games – at the beginning of this month – the launch of a mobile gaming service for Android users. Meanwhile Platform said he was working on an iOS version of the same service.

Bloomberg tech reporter Mark Gurman commented that Apple’s App Store policies could prevent Netflix from making games available from its app.

Apple currently prohibits third-party apps from hosting games, which has become an issue for cloud gaming services such as Xbox Cloud Gaming, Nvidia GeForce Now, and Google Stadia.

Thus, cloud gaming services can get around the situation only by offering their games through a web application, as Facebook has already done.

According to the latest Gurman Power On newsletter, Netflix will bypass Apple’s rules for listing its games on the App Store. That is, games cannot be downloaded or played from the Netflix app, but people can start from the platform.

The service currently works this way on Android, where games are neatly bundled into a dedicated tab in the Netflix app and downloaded separately from the Google Play Store.

While this setup is fine, it’s not exactly ideal for a gaming service that sells a one-stop service. Users should be able to download and play games within the service itself, which is why Gourmet predicts that Netflix will eventually bring their games to the service. cloud

This will work well for AndroidBut Apple’s policy makes it nearly impossible for cloud gaming to evolve, forcing services to be content with web applications. If Netflix decides to implement cloud gaming, it’s unclear what will happen to the service on iOS.

As a result, “Apple will have to change its rules or provide an exception for Netflix,” Gurman said. “This leaves the ultimate success of Netflix in the hands of Apple, a longtime partner but also a growing competitor,” he said.
