“The Directorate General of Health (DGS) reports that a further 14 cases of human infection with monkeypox virus have been confirmed in Portugal, with 37 confirmed cases in the north, in Lisbon, the Tagus Valley and the Algarve regions. Results relative to other samples.,” reads a statement sent this Monday to newsrooms.

The new cases have been confirmed by the Instituto Nacional de Saúde Doutor Ricardo Jorge (INSA), and among the samples available, a West African clade (subgroup of virus) has been identified that is the least aggressive.

Identified cases remain under dispensary observation, are in a stable condition and are on outpatient treatment. Epidemiological investigations of identified suspected cases are ongoing to identify chains of transmission and potential new cases and their respective contacts.

In case of suspicious symptoms – ulcerative lesions, skin rash, palpable lymph nodes, which may be accompanied by fever, chills, headache, muscle pain and fatigue – medical attention should be sought.

Anyone who is ill or in a suspicious situation should refrain from direct physical contact with other people and from sharing clothing, towels, sheets and personal items while having skin lesions or other symptoms.
