Mississippi asks for multinational telecommunications companies conglomerate AT&T provide records of the work he promised to do to expand broadband in the state after Civil Service Commission gave the company nearly $ 300 million, officials said.

Public Service Commissioner Brandon Presley has signed a subpoena for AT&T’s filing of the company’s approval to provide Internet access in 133,000 locations across the state through the Connect America Foundation, a federal rural broadband expansion program.

The subpoena requires submission of documents showing the number of actual AT&T fixed wireless subscribers in the 133,000 localities where the company claims the service was provided. It also asks for the number of complaints filed with the company by customers who used the services and the number of residents who applied for fixed wireless services based on AT&T’s claim that they were available and later determined not to be in the zone cover.

Before issuing a subpoena for investigation, Presley said Commissioner Presley unofficially requested documentation from AT&T regarding the actual number of locations benefiting from the $ 280 million project, and AT&T declined. Several items on today’s agenda were part of requests for data from utility personnel that were ignored by AT&T.

“AT&T has embezzled $ 283,780,632 in government money with the promise of expanding internet services, but they refuse to answer the most basic questions from the regulator regarding the use of these dollars and the actual success of their plans,” Presley said. “It is very important. It’s clear to me that AT&T’s position is to take as much government money as possible and answer as few questions from regulators as possible. ”

An AT&T spokesman said Friday night that the company is in compliance with Connect America Fund law and requirements.
