Microsoft is finally signaling the end of the current Control Panel in Windows 11. The software giant has made a number of changes to its Windows 11 Settings section, and this month the company began testing even more different ways to replace Control functionality. Panel.
In new trial versions of Windows 11, Microsoft moved advanced network settings to a new page in the Settings app that includes folder sharing, printer sharing, and network discovery options. Some entry points for network and device settings in Windows 11 also redirect to the Settings app instead of forcing you to go to Control Panel.
Elsewhere, links to the section in Control Panel used to uninstall apps are now redirected to the Settings app. Even the uninstall Windows updates section is now part of the Settings app, not Control Panel.
These latest changes were adopted after several attempts to exit the Windows 10 Control Panel. Microsoft originally introduced a separate Settings application in Windows 8 as a way to redefine its traditional Control Panel. The two existed side-by-side for support reasons, just like Microsoft had two browsers (Internet Explorer and Microsoft Edge) inside Windows 10.
The Settings app is meant to be a new broom that cleans everything up, but there are many more settings that require entering the control panel. Windows 10 has made things better, and Windows 11 offers an even more modern take on how users control their computers.
Microsoft describes these recent changes as “an ongoing effort to bring Control Panel customizations into the Settings app.” It’s clear that Microsoft is looking to clean up this area of Windows and ultimately make the Control Panel redundant.
Windows 11 was largely an attempt to modernize and simplify the Windows operating system, which has been used in the same way for decades. Microsoft didn’t go far enough with the Control Panel for the initial release of Windows 11, but in other areas, such as the taskbar, it has simplified a lot.
