Miami stopped reopening when Florida’s new coronavirus cases increased

Miami has put the brakes on moving to the next phase of reopening due to concerns over the increase in corona virus cases, the mayor said.

“We will not back down, but we are rather sounding the alarm,” Miami Mayor Francis Suarez said Monday. NBC6 reported.

Suarez said there were “major concerns” about entering phase three due to increasing local cases, some among people aged 18 to 35 years.

“We will be put in a situation where we have to make difficult choices and that is not what we want,” Suarez said. “Now is not the time to let your guard down.”

The city is currently in phase two of reopening, which allows bars, cinemas and tattoo parlors to continue business with restrictions.

Suarez said there were no current plans for the city to return to stay-at-home orders, despite an increase in cases.

“We understand that these are historically difficult times today, where 42 million people are unemployed, and applying to stay at home is something that is temporarily effective, and we see how effective it is mathematically, it is the final step,” Said Suarez.

The Sunshine State reports two consecutive days of more than 2,000 new daily cases over the weekend when additional beaches are reopened.

Florida had recorded more than 80,000 cases on Tuesday afternoon, including at least 2,900 deaths, according to data from Johns Hopkins University.
