According to the leader of the German government, the floods, which in recent days have caused a chain of death and destruction, indicate the need to “ambitiously” deal with the climate crisis.

“From here we have a real picture of what happened in front of a surreal and ghostly panorama,” Angela Merkel said while visiting several affected areas in the Rhineland-Palatinate region. “I would almost say that in German it is difficult to find words to describe the destruction caused,” he added.

During a visit to areas hit hard by heavy rains, the Chancellor promised that “the federal government and the regions will work together to gradually restore order” in these areas.

Noting the magnitude of the damage, Merkel called for an accelerated fight against climate change, noting that the damage caused by extreme weather events is “greater than in the past.”

“We must hurry, we must act faster in the fight against climate change,” Angela Merkel said to the media and local residents after visiting the village of Schuld, which has since been called the site of the “martyrs”. everything in this area was destroyed by the power of water.

At least 183 people died, 156 in Germany and 27 in Belgium, according to the latest official estimate of victims of heavy rains and floods that hit parts of Central Europe.

Several dozen people remain unavailable and have been reported missing.

Unfavorable weather conditions also caused serious material damage.

In addition to Belgium and Germany, heavy rainfall and subsequent flooding caused severe material damage to the Netherlands, Luxembourg and Switzerland.
