In recent years, ransomware attacks have become a persistent phenomenon. This scourge does not seem to force target selection, and many companies fall prey to these attacks, randomly and without assessing the consequences of their actions.

The most recent victim of such an attack was MediaMarkt, which lost part of its network. The impact is great, and it is suspending many of this company’s systems and even stores across Europe.

The attack on MediaMarkt will happen early Monday morning. When accessing services earlier in the day, the network administrators of this group discovered that many of their systems were locked and encrypted, making it impossible to access data.

As far as is known, the problem will affect the main branches of the company in the Netherlands and Germany. There are also reports that this attack will spread to some stores in some European countries, which will make them work.

Although all online stores are working without any visible problems, it is known that more than 3,100 servers and many workstations were affected. The affected stores are having problems with cash registers that do not accept some payment methods.

The ransomware used in this attack is the well-known ransomware Hive Ransomware, and it costs € 240 million to re-publish the data. MediaMarkt is the largest electronic equipment sales group with over 1000 stores in 13 countries. Annual revenue is approximately $ 20.8 billion.

MediaMarktSaturn Retail Group and its national organizations have been cyberattacked. The company has immediately informed the competent authorities and is working at full capacity to identify the affected systems and repair any damage caused as soon as possible. In brick-and-mortar stores, access to some services may be limited at this time.

MediaMarktSaturn remains available to its customers across all sales channels and makes every effort to make all services available again without restrictions as soon as possible.

The company will provide information on new developments on the topic.

MediaMarkt has already confirmed this issue and ensures that it is working on a solution as soon as possible. It will notify the authorities as soon as it becomes aware of the ransomware attack, and will also shut down the affected systems.

This case is still under development and there is still no concrete idea of what impact this ransomware attack had on MediaMarkt. More information will certainly be revealed over the next few days, and the full extent of this attack should be known by then.
