Marvel’s Avengers: The game is now available on PS4, Xbox and more.
The release will take place more than two years after Marvel Entertainment announced a partnership with a Japanese gaming company.
The new Avengers game costs $ 60 and includes in-game transactions for cosmetic improvements. While there is a story mode that lasts about a dozen hours, the game also has a multiplayer mode where you play online with others.
The developers plan to make the game look like “Fortnite”, support it for years to come with constant updates and add more content over time. This is a departure from the traditional strategy, in which games were released as separate physical copies with a fixed experience that ended after winning.
Disney hasn’t had much success with past multiplayer projects like Toontown and Marvel Heroes, which have closed over time.
“The new direction with Marvel’s Avengers is more likely to succeed because of the strength of the franchise and the changes in online consumer behavior since then,” said Jost van Droynen, founder of investment firm New Breukelen.
Marvel’s Avengers immerses players in action with a tense battle scene at San Francisco’s Golden Gate Bridge. After the tragedy, the team breaks up, but after a few years they must reunite to save the world again.
Although at first glance the plot sounds like parts of movies Avengers: Infinity War and Endgame introduces a new character, Kamala Khan, better known as Ms. Marvel, previously little known outside of comics. Kamala is an American Muslim heroine who can use her elastic fists like slingshots and transform into more than the Hulk.
From the start of the game, players can see what it’s like to play as Thor, The Incredible Hulk, Iron Man, Captain America, and Black Widow. It’s epic, with cinematic battle scenes accompanied by the clatter of your controller. God of War fans may find Thor’s playstyle of striking enemies in the air over and over again similar to the 2018 game, as the Marvel Avengers battle director worked on both.
The game was developed by Crystal Dynamics, a subsidiary of Square Enix, which worked on the critically acclaimed Tomb Raider video game series.
You won’t find Hollywood’s biggest stars in games. The developers have hired a new cast to portray Captain America, Iron Man, Black Widow, Hulk and Thor. But the outfits, styles, and wit of the characters remain the same.
Avengers Endgame grossed $ 1.2 billion in the first weekend of April last year, breaking records. Marvel Studios has grossed over $ 20 billion at the worldwide box office from its larger Marvel Cinematic Universe.
“This is a brilliant MCU expansion, even if its gameplay could be tweaked,” said Dreunen, founder of the investment company, referring to the bugs found during the preview. “The arrival of a new protagonist like Kamala Khan signals that Disney is ready to rewrite its own IP scenario.”
