This Sunday, the President of the Republic called for “calm, composure and common sense” when he spoke about the possibility of the latest version of SARS-CoV-2 arriving in Portugal and recalled the measures that will take effect. from Wednesday fair.

“According to the Prime Minister, there is not a single case so far. [da variante denominada omicron] and on the one hand, the measures will take effect, so calmness, composure and common sense are what is required, ”Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa replied when asked if he was worried about the development of a pandemic due to the new strain.

Rejecting the idea that he was optimistic about the impact of this option, the head of state felt that it was always necessary to be “on the sidelines”, since most of the previously identified options “did not have the seriousness that was expected at the beginning”.

“Let’s wait and see,” he urged.

Prime Minister Antonio Costa announced that there is still no data on people infected with the Omicron variant found in South Africa and that it is already spreading to several countries around the world. Examples include the Netherlands, Germany, Belgium and Australia.

The proliferation of this new option prompted several European countries to announce air border closures to passengers from South African countries such as Mozambique.

Angola, despite being geographically included in this part of the African continent, is not included in the list of countries with travel restrictions. Marcelo based his decision on the strict health policy the country has followed since the start of the pandemic – the government of Angola announced on Saturday that it will also suspend flights to several countries due to this tension.
