Concern for her daughter spoke louder. However, Mahdi Al-Wazni grabbed his mobile phone and started filming, trying to keep the gunman away. This is a story with a happy ending, about a day that turned out to be tragic.

It was a Sunday, like many others for 34-year-old Mahdi Al-Wazni. We have dinner with the whole family at one of Field’s restaurants in Copenhagen, Denmark. Until the panic started around him. shopping mall shooting.

“I was at a restaurant upstairs in the Fields with my family when we heard people screaming and running around looking for a way out. I asked my brother to gather the children so we could leave,” he tells the Danish press.

But suddenly Mahdi realized that his two-year-old daughter was not here. It was during his search for her that he crossed paths with the shooter, who authorities confirmed was a 22-year-old Dane. The first reaction was to start shooting so that the suspect, dressed in hunting clothes, would not shoot. They were eye to eye.

“He laughed and said that they were not real shots, maybe he was trying to trick me into coming closer. He shot at the windows, broke them. I think five or six times, but I didn’t see him hit anyone,” he recalls.

The police showed up soon after, after a warning was issued around 5:30 p.m. The suspect left the mall and was detained on the street. Authorities indicate that this led to the death and injury of several people, although they do not give specific numbers.

Madhi will find his daughter. The girl was locked in a room with another family member for several hours. “I was afraid that something would happen to him. I didn’t feel anything anymore while I was in front of him. I had to find her. Then I started filming to make sure I signed up if he wanted to shoot me.”

There have been no such attacks in Denmark since 2015. At the time, the author, also aged 22, killed a man during a debate organized by a Muhammad cartoonist and another man in a synagogue in central Copenhagen. Contrary to what happened this Sunday, he was shot dead by the police.
