This week, the Municipality of Mafra became the first Portuguese municipality to commit itself to achieving the goals of the 2030 Agenda by joining the United Nations SDG Cities.

Thus, Mafra became one of the 35 municipalities in the world that received the “City – Sustainable Development Goals” (SDGs).

The announcement of Mafra’s accession was made by UN Habitat Program Coordinator Dyfed Aubry at a ceremony held in Ericeira attended by Carlos Miguel, Secretary of State for Local Government and Spatial Planning.

Therefore, Mafra is committed to the 17 goals of the 2030 Agenda, including eradicating poverty and hunger, promoting quality healthcare and education, gender equality, reducing inequalities, promoting sustainable production and consumption, or protecting marine and terrestrial life.

The ceremony also saw the signing of an agreement between Dyfed Aubrey and the municipalities of Mafra, Braga and Loulé to set up ODS laboratories where the program will be trained. The Mozambican municipality of Quelimane was also present and signed an agreement to promote the program in Mozambique.
