Macau at heart: 15 years of Portuguese folklore dancing

The Macau no Coração group, founded in 2006, dances typical Portuguese folklore in Portuguese, Chinese and Macan. In the year of the pandemic and without a show, the president of the group, Ana Manniao, wants to improve the group’s costumes and even open a school of traditional Portuguese dances.

She does not know how to dance and sing, but as a lover of Portuguese culture, Ana Mannão created the group Macau no Coração in 2006. This is a group that has performed locally and in China without serious institutional support, showing some traditional Portuguese folk dances. Portuguese folklore associations help in the creation of the costumes, but Ana Mannão wants to develop this project further.

“We want to have enough music and costumes to have a theme on every show, because nowadays we often dress like Minho but dance to Nazaré’s songs. This is not the case in Portugal. We want to show different regions of Portugal, but we couldn’t change the costumes. If we had more elements, we could do different shows, ”he told HM.

“In addition to dancing, we are also studying costumes,” he stressed. But Ana Magnao also intends to develop a project for a folklore school. “I wanted to see if we could do it, because there are traditional dance schools in Portugal, but there are none in Macau. And I wanted to open a folk dance school, but as if it were a center where we would also divulge costumes and customs. “
