About a month after the start of the eruption, the strongest earthquake (4.6 points) occurred today at a depth of 37 kilometers, which, according to the scientific representative of the Volcanic Emergency Plan in the Canary Islands (Pevolca), Maria José Blanco, it is possible that it will happen again.

Also today, airlines stopped flights at La Palma airport due to an ash cloud caused by the volcano that could affect the airspace between La Palma, La Gomera and northern Tenerife.

While airports in the rest of the archipelago continue to operate, the airport on La Palma faced severe restrictions, forcing the cancellation of 30 of its 34 scheduled flights.

“The evolution of the ash cloud from the volcanic eruption of La Palma is forcing us to temporarily keep planes flying off the island on the ground until Sunday,” Binter said in a statement released today.

Bad weather conditions will persist between 24 and 36 hours, said Blanco, who gave the good news at a press conference after the Pevolka meeting: the new eruption point that appeared on Friday is less active today and continues to emit only ash.

It is impossible to foresee that this new eruption point will emit magma, and, in principle, its activity is limited to the formation of a column of ash that reaches an altitude of 4500 meters.

According to experts, the presence of lava tubes and the fact that the smelting furnaces have increased in height and slightly expanded, makes it difficult for the front of the lava flow to advance.

The area affected by the eruption is about 742 hectares with a maximum width of 2350 meters, 1923 buildings are affected, of which 1826 are completely destroyed and 97 are in danger.
