UEFA this Thursday announced disciplinary action against England following the Euro 2020 semi-final against Denmark at Wembley in London on Wednesday. At the heart of the process is the fact that an English fan directed a laser at Kasper Schmeichel, the Danish goalkeeper, when the latter was preparing to defend the penalty awarded by Harry Kane.

The moment happened in the first half of extra time. On Sterling, Maele fouled in the Danish penalty area and Harry Kane was called up to convert the penalty. Then the footage from the TV broadcast allowed us to realize that the green light emanating from the laser was aimed directly at Kasper Schmeichel’s face. to distract the goalkeeper and prevent the attacker’s reaction to kick.

Controversy at Wembley: were there two goals in the penalty shoot-out over Sterling?

Schmeichel ultimately managed to fend off Kane’s first kick, but he allowed the striker to land a kick on the rebound – a moment that ultimately secured England’s presence in the Euro 2020 final and Denmark’s subsequent elimination. In a statement UEFA explains that England is accused of “disturbing its fans during the singing of the Danish national anthem” and using “fireworks” by supporters. “The case will be reviewed by the UEFA Control, Ethics and Disciplinary Body in due course,” reads the note.

It should be recalled that the moment of the fine is shrouded in several controversies, besides the laser: in addition, the alleged absence of Maele on Sterling is very doubtful, although it is confirmed by the VAR. TV images allow us to see that there were two balls on the field at the time of the shot, what the Denmark selector promoted shortly after the end of the game. That is, the move could not be confirmed.
