The cone of the volcano Cumbre Vieja on the island of Palma is located in collapse risk

This was stated by Maria José Blanco, spokeswoman for the Canary Islands Volcanic Emergency Plan and Director of the National Geographic Institute (IGN) of the Canary Islands, who explained this Friday that the hypothesis of a complete or partial collapse of a volcanic eruption cone could mean a more rapid advance of lava in the area that have not yet been evacuated.

This scenario could have been caused by an increase in seismic activity recorded at about 13:00 to a level not yet reached. More explosions were reported and the authorities ruled that compulsory confinement because of the “cloud ash and toxic gases“, confirming that two new mouths appeared on the slope of the volcano, emitting lava spreading at great speed.

Thus, on Friday afternoon, three quarters of La Palma were quickly evacuated. 160 people evicted from their homes for preventive purposes. Most of the people were housed in relatives’ homes, according to information provided Newspaper, with the rest – in hotel units.

Pevolca’s technical director, Miguel Angel Monquerde, explained that the order of confinement was considered the most appropriate as an increase in volcanic activity was detected, which was reflected in an increase in gas emissions.
