La Palma airport closes again due to ash cloud

This Thursday morning, the airport on the Spanish island of La Palma was closed again due to an ash cloud caused by the eruption of the Cumbre Vieja volcano.

“The airport is currently closed,” said a spokesman for Aena, manager of Spanish airports, adding that the runways will need to be “cleared” before the runways open.

This is the second airport closure since the September 19 volcanic eruption.

Following the closure of the airport due to an ash cloud, two airlines flying between La Palma and the rest of the Canary Islands, Binter and Canarfly, have suspended flights scheduled for this Thursday.

Both airlines were forced to make this decision due to force majeure, as the situation has deteriorated significantly and is expected to continue, at least today, making it impossible to carry out operations with the necessary safety requirements.

Meanwhile, the volcano’s activity has remained stable over the past few hours, with “constant behavior” and lava flowing in the same stream.

According to the latest report from the Department of Homeland Security on the situation, “although the number of earthquakes and their severity have decreased in recent hours, the population is still feeling displacement, which could lead to small collapses on the slopes.”

The lava delta formed upon contact with water covers an area of 38 hectares.

A volcanic ash ejection reaches a height of three thousand meters and the wind directs them to the northeast.

Till Wednesday, 726 buildings destroyed lava, most of which were private homes. More than six thousand people were forced to flee their homes.

The volcano Cumbre Vieja is located on the island of La Palma, one of the islands of the Spanish archipelago of the Canary Islands, located in the Atlantic Ocean, off the coast of Morocco.

On Wednesday came into force a decree-law on urgent measures to support the “economic and social reconstruction” of the island of La Palma worth 213.7 million euros.

This amount is added to the 10.5 million euros approved by the Spanish executive last week for the purchase of houses and essential goods for residents affected by the volcanic eruption.

Since Wednesday, an online auction of the Spanish national jerseys, signed by the players, is taking place. This is an initiative of the Spanish Football Federation to raise funds for the victims.
