Kamala Harris, accompanied by her husband Doug Emhoff, joined the LGBTQ + pride march promoted by the Washington-based organization, walking several meters in the American capital with the participants, EFE reported.

“We must provide the best protection for our transgender community and our young people. We still need additional protection related to employment and housing. There is still a lot of work to be done and we are committed to that goal, ”said the US Vice President.

Kamala Harris spoke after US President Joe Biden celebrated the 5th anniversary of the worst attack on the LGTBQ + community in US history, in a Florida nightclub shootout that killed 49 people.

In his statement, Joe Biden called for increased gun control and emphasized “the special impact of armed violence on LGTBQ + communities” and condemned “an epidemic of violence and hatred against transgender women, especially non-white transgender women”.

According to the Human Rights Campaign (HRC), at least 44 transgender or non-binary genders were killed in the United States in 2020, the deadliest year for this group in a decade, and another 28 have died this year.

President Biden also called on the Senate to “swiftly” pass the Equality Act, which prohibits “discrimination on the basis of sex, sexual orientation, and gender identity” in public places and in federal-funded social programs.
