JN: Lula admits corruption at Petrobras but says Lava Jato crossed a line

Minister Facin mentions "authoritarian populism" that threatens democracy

Former President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, the PT candidate for President of the Republic, confessed on Saturday to National magazine, from TV Globo, the existence of corruption in Petrobras during his reign. “You can’t say that there was no corruption if people confessed (to crimes),” said the former president, who faced embezzlement of public funds at a state-owned company.

However, he opposed the plea deal. “People went to confession, and because people went to confession, they got rich in confessions,” he said. The PT did not announce new measures to prevent a recurrence of corruption scandals if it wins the election. He also stated that “Jato’s Lava has gone beyond investigation and into politics.” “The goal was to try to convict Lulu,” PT said, using a third person.

Convicted of passive corruption and money laundering in the Guaruja (SP) triple case, Lula was arrested in April 2018 and served his sentence in a special cell of the Federal Police Department in Curitiba. He was released after a year and seven months, following a decision by the Federal Supreme Court that overturned the possibility of execution after a second-instance conviction.

Lula also made no commitment to support the selection of the Republic’s Attorney General from a triple list elected by the prosecutors. He said he would decide it only after the elections. “I wish they had a little flea behind their ear.”

Thanks to the accelerated speech, he was able to expand his answers without allowing interviewers William Bonner and Renate Vasconcellos to interrupt him. Faced with economic figures in the administration of Dilma Rousseff (PT), the PT member tried to disassociate himself from the former president. He criticized the tax exemption. “Dilma had an extraordinary first term. However, she went into debt to support social policy and (fight) unemployment,” he said.

“You made a mistake about gasoline. Against her was a dynamic duet. Eduardo (Cunha) and Esio (Neves), who tried to keep him from changing. If you ever leave Globo, Bonner, you will know that a dead king is a king.

“JEALOUSY”

In the interview, PT also avoided taking economic measures. He counted on his deputy, Geraldo Alkmin (PSB), to demonstrate confidence in the economic field by promising “trust, stability and predictability.”

“I even envy Alcmina. Alcmine was even accepted by PT. I am 100% sure that his experience as governor of Sao Paulo will help me fix this country,” Lula said, when asked about political polarization and the PT’s responsibility for creating such a climate.

“Brazil and Brazilian democracy were happy when the polarization of this country was between PT and PSDB. We were political opponents, exchanging barbs. When we met at the restaurant, I didn’t have a beer problem with Fernando Enrique Cardoso, José Serra or Alcmin. We didn’t treat each other like enemies.”

Asked if his opponents accused him of not denouncing leftist Latin American dictatorships and could not be seen as a contradiction for a Democrat, Lula was evasive and avoided criticizing governments such as those of Venezuela and Nicaragua. “We must respect the self-determination of peoples. Each country takes care of its own nose,” he replied. “Brazil will be friends with everyone.”

Lula also dealt with the secret budget and said it was worse than a monthly allowance, a congressional vote-buying scandal to approve government-friendly measures during his first term. This was the moment when he criticized President Jair Bolsonaro (PL), a candidate for re-election.

“The presidency is over. Bolsonaro does not send anything, he is a hostage of the Congress. One of our tasks with Alkmin is to put an end to this semi-presidential business. Bolsonaro is like a court jester.” With regard to management, he said he intends to talk to all parties without exception. “Centrão is not a political party. Whoever wins will have to talk to Congress.”

The dollar continues to reflect the political scenario

Yesterday, financial agents evaluated the opposite decision of the Federal Supreme Court (STF) regarding the so-called secret budget. In addition, a decision was made by STF Minister Gilmar Méndez to issue an injunction that would exclude the Bolsa Família from the spending cap rule, with investors trying to understand how this measure would affect the processing of the transitional PEC in the Chamber of Deputies. Oh this PEC!!!!

Since he is an exchange investor, any reading that the budget will be exceeded or become more flexible will negatively affect the exchange market, whether through the PEC or in any other way. We will continue with volatility today.

Looking beyond, the US Central Bank (Fed), although slowing down the pace of monetary tightening at its December meeting, issued a tougher-than-expected statement warning that its fight against inflation was not yet over, raising fears that rising US interest rates will push the world’s largest economy into recession.

The currency market continues to react to political news. The voting on the PEC is saved for today. It is expected that it will indeed be reviewed to open the way tomorrow for discussions on the 2023 budget.

Yesterday, the spot price closed the selling day at R$5.3103.

For today on the calendar we will have an index of consumer confidence in the eurozone. Good luck and good luck in business!!

The EU has reached a political agreement on limiting gas prices – 19.12.2022

Germany sentenced Russian to life imprisonment for political murder by order of Moscow - 12/15/2021
BRUSSELS, DECEMBER 19 (ANSA). European Union countries reached a political agreement on Monday (19) to impose a natural gas price ceiling of 180 euros per megawatt hour (MWh). The main sources of income for Russia and the minimization of the use of energy as a weapon by the regime of Vladimir Putin.

The agreement was approved by a supermajority at a ministerial meeting of member states in Brussels, Belgium, after months of discussions about the best way to contain the rise in natural gas prices in the bloc caused by Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. .

The value set by the countries is well below the proposal made by the European Commission, the EU’s executive body, in November: 275 EUR/MWh. However, the countries leading the cap campaign were in favor of an even lower limit, around 100 EUR/MWh.

Germany, always wary of price controls, voted in favor of 180 euros, while Austria and the Netherlands, also skeptical of the cap, abstained. Hungary, the most pro-Russian country in the EU, voted against.

The instrument will enter into force on 15 February, but only if natural gas prices on the Amsterdam Stock Exchange exceed 180 euros/MWh for three consecutive days. In addition, the difference compared to a number of global benchmarks should be more than 35 euros.

Italy, the EU’s biggest supporter of the ceiling, has claimed responsibility for the measure. “This is a victory for Italy, which believed and worked for us to reach this agreement,” Environment and Energy Minister Gilberto Picetto tweeted.

“This is a victory for Italian and European citizens who demand energy security,” he added.

Currently, the gas price in Amsterdam is around 110 EUR/MWh, which is already a reflection of the agreement in Brussels – in August the figure even broke the barrier of 340 EUR/MWh.

However, Russia has already threatened to stop exports to countries that adhere to the ceiling. (ANSA).
