International student enrollment in Portuguese higher education rises 132% to record high – Observer

The demand for international students from Portuguese universities has reached the highest level: 3483 applications from international students as of May 31, second data from the Ministry of Science, Technology and Higher Education provided by Jornal de Notícias.

This figure represents an increase of 132% over 2019, which was already the year with the highest number of international student applications ever. This rise came after a year of a pandemic that impeded student mobility and caused an 18% drop. Currently there are about 65,000 international students study in Portugal… Of these, 18% are Erasmus students.

Cape Verde, Brazil and the rest of the Portuguese-speaking African countries (PALOP) are the main countries from which these international candidates come, according to the Jornal de Notícias.

ABOUT Bragança Polytechnicthe country’s educational institution, which admitted the largest number of new foreign students last year, this year recorded the largest increase – 172% – in the demand of foreign students for short courses. As for the masters, compared to 2020, the number of academic degrees increased by 71% and 28%.
