On Thursday, in the Choluteca department of southern Honduras, a crowd of more than 600 beat an Italian to death, ostensibly in retaliation for the death of a neighbor in that city.

The Honduran Security Secretariat said in a statement that “about 600 armed men” from the Los Mangos area in the municipality of Santa Ana de Yusguare invaded Giorgio Scanu’s home, where he was beaten for “the recent death of one person.” a citizen “.

During the armed attack, the mafia set fire to Skana’s house and car and beat him with sticks and stones.

Agents of the Honduran National Police tried to intervene to rescue him, but the attackers “disobeyed the call to order and committed several illegal actions that led to the death of Mr. Giorgio Scanu,” police said.

The man died in a local hospital as a result of lynching. Honduran Police Director General Orbin Galo ordered the formation of a “team of investigators” to investigate the incident and catch those responsible.

Security commanders in the border area between Honduras and Nicaragua have “clear instructions on how to conduct and maintain police operations to expedite the identification and capture of those responsible for this criminal act,” the security ministry said.

According to local authorities, violence in Honduras results in an average of 10 to 11 murders per day, with most crimes attributed to organized crime and drug gangs and groups.
