The presenter Luciano Hac used the frame “Who Wants to Be a Millionaire?” lead a history lesson on open television. Using the example of a Venezuelan refugee, he hinted at the risks Brazil is exposed to when faced with a situation similar to that of a neighboring country.

We are talking about Marifer Vargas, a professor of history and geography from Venezuela, who left the country four years ago. Her husband came to Brazil five years ago after reporting corruption in a Venezuelan state company. He, who worked for a public television company, was politically persecuted and, along with his wife, was kidnapped.

The story made Luciano warn his audience several times about the risks and changes that could occur in the country if democracy ended. “Your generation in Venezuela has experienced first hand what happens when there is an authoritarian regime, an undemocratic regime, it does not matter whether it is left or right. I’m talking about democracy, freedom. “

Marifer led an upper middle class life in Maracay. She lived in a 350 m² house, had a car and had a good job with her husband. Upon arrival in Brazil, she and her daughter had to share a room with 15 other women in São Paulo.

“The neighbor next door is proof that life can change a lot – everyone’s life – in the blink of an eye. It changes from one image to another. It makes you change your country, your life, your lifestyle, everything, ”said Luciano.

Another situation mentioned by the teacher was a change in the Venezuelan school curriculum, in which, with the coming to power of the military, the “absolute sovereignty of the Motherland” was emphasized. In addition, the government has sent more military personnel to schools.

When asked how long it took for Marifer’s life to completely change, Luciano warned again. “This whole dream of a mistaken government in terms of freedom that offends democracy, how soon it all ended and you found yourself forced to flee to another country.”

Marifer replied that this turn in family and country life took about two years.

Those who watched, paying a little more attention, get the point.
