A Greenpeace activist parachuted into the Allianz Arena in Munich as France and Germany prepared for their second Group F match on Tuesday. The yellow parachute bore a symbol of organization and a message. “Kick Out Oil” – in Portuguese “Expulsem o Petróleo” – written just above.

Greenpeace Germany confirmed the authorship of the protest on Twitter and explained that the message was addressed to Volkswagen: “Activists are protesting against the sponsor of the game between Germany and France and demand: stop selling diesel and gasoline cars that are harmful to the climate.” The initiative has been criticized on social media for being potentially dangerous to participants and fans at the stadium.

The activist descended from the roof of the German stadium and immediately after landing was removed from the field. Two athletes from Germany – defender Antonio Rüdiger and left-back Robin Gosens – nevertheless approached the parachutist and exchanged a few words with him before they were stopped by security. The episode did not affect the start of the match in any way.

But the activist’s descent to the ground was difficult: the footage shows the parachutist circling in the air and dangerously approaching the stands where the media were preparing to cover the game. Before approaching the supporters, he crashed into the ground and survived the trip, seemingly without serious injury.
