Google releases Portuguese-language guide to attracting news startups

The Google News Initiative to improve digital journalism kicked off on Tuesday (17). Portuguese guide The Startup Lab Experience, a mentoring program aimed at accelerating startups in journalism. The purpose of the story, according to Google, is to help entrepreneurs launch a digital news startup that is “financially viable and journalistic.”

This guide is the result of the first Startup Lab release in Brazil, which featured ten startups from October last year to May this year. Each company received funding of up to US $ 20,000 (R $ 105,000), as well as mentoring, training and workshops on strategy, product, business model, sales and marketing, community building and fundraising.

Ten Brazilian journalism companies and organizations took part in the initiative: Agencia BORI, Agencia Tatu, Alma Preta, AzMina, Fervura, São Paulo for Children, Galapagos Islands, Nucleo Hornalismo, MyNews and Ponte Jornalismo.

The content of the guide includes tips, templates, and other resources for news startups covering topics such as mission, values, business plan, funding sources, and revenue. “Our goal is to break some of the myths and make it easier for those who want to build a digital news startup as a sustainable business,” adds Fabiana Zanni, Startup Lab Coordinator in Brazil. Google promises that the content of the guide will be constantly updated.

“The founders delved into the fundamental issues of how their companies operate, such as choosing the best business model, and were encouraged to think about journalism beyond storytelling and reporting, and adhering to the demands of the information consumer market for a core product. about his work, news, ”says Zanni.
