Germany ready for energy independence from Russia, warns Scholz – Observer

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz reiterated on Thursday that the “challenge” of gaining independence from Russian energy from the Kremlin-accepted invasion of Ukraine and from fossil fuels in general did not take Germany “by surprise”.

After meeting with heads of state governments, the Chancellor emphasized that all agreed to strengthen supply infrastructure and encourage the use of renewable energy sources.. The meeting also noted the rise in energy prices and the impact on the population.

Scholz recalled that his government has approved two €30 billion tax relief packages that he estimates benefit 90% of citizens.but acknowledged that they might not be enough in the future.

On the other hand, during the meeting, the need for a joint strategy was noted in case of a possible wave of infections with a new coronavirus in the fall.

They decided to wait for reports from experts who advise the Executive and General Staff on emergencies arising from the pandemic before making “hasty decisions”.

In any case, the need to promote the vaccination campaign in view of the winter season and create a legal framework to allow restrictions was established, although Scholz had already ruled out the closure of schools and kindergartens.
