Germany hits new daily high of COVID-19 cases

Germany has 37,120 new coronavirus cases, the second daily record in a row, and the CDC warned that unvaccinated people now face a “very high” risk of infection.

The number in the past 24 hours compares to Thursday’s record of 33,949 new cases, which in turn surpassed the previous record of 33,777 new cases set on December 18 last year.

While it is possible that these numbers have increased due to an increase in the number of tests and late reports following the regional Monday weekend in some of the hardest-hit areas, they confirm a steady rise in infections over the past few weeks, bringing covid-19 closer together again. in the headlines of German newspapers.

154 people have also died from COVID-19, bringing the total number of deaths in Germany to 96,346, according to the Robert Koch Institute.

The country’s infection rate has already exceeded the peak reached during the peak of cases in the spring, although, according to data on Friday, it still lags behind the worst figure in December.

Over the past seven days, there have been 169.9 cases per 100,000 inhabitants, up from 139.2 in the previous week. This is still lower than in many other European countries, but it is already sounding the alarm for the authorities.

In a weekly report released Thursday, the Robert Koch Institute warned that unvaccinated or partially vaccinated people now face “very high” health risks – in contrast to a previous estimate that the risk for these citizens was “high.”

“For fully vaccinated people, the threat is considered moderate, but it is increasing with the growing number of infections,” he added.

Federal and regional health officials analyzed the response to be given at the two-day meeting that ended in Bavaria this Friday.

Germany’s health minister has called for more revaccinations, more frequent checks on people’s vaccinations or test status, and mandating nationwide testing of staff and visitors to nursing homes.

In a highly decentralized Germany, state governments have the primary responsibility for enforcing and easing restrictions.

The authorities are also again calling on German residents who have not yet been vaccinated to get vaccinated. They argue that the burden on hospital beds is increasing, especially in regions where vaccination rates are relatively low.

Official figures show that about two-thirds of Germany’s population – just 83 million people – received the first dose of the vaccine, but there are significant regional differences.
