The classification would result in significant travel restrictions from the UK to Germany. All travelers from this area will be subject to a two-week quarantine period, which cannot be shortened even if the test is negative.

The German government will automatically comply with this recommendation of the Robert Koch Institute.

The United Kingdom is the first European country to become a region where the virus and its varieties are circulating again. According to Germany, only 11 countries in Asia, Africa and Latin America currently fall into this high-risk category.

The Indian variant of the B.1.617.2 virus is considered to be particularly contagious and has become one of the main reasons for the outbreak of infections in India in recent months.

According to UK Health Secretary Matt Hancock, 2,967 cases have been identified in the UK to date, associated with the most contagious variant B1.617.2, including in the North West of England and London, up 30% since Monday.

The government is accused of being in no rush to impose travel restrictions from India in April, despite the health situation in the UK has improved after a long and tough winter confinement and a massive vaccination campaign.

German Health Minister Jens Spahn raised concerns about the UK this morning, saying that it is necessary to “prevent the spread of this variant” in Germany even before the new classification is introduced.

According to the Robert Koch Institute, Germany, which has adopted a very preventive policy in the fight against the virus, has 3,635,162 COVID-19 cases and 87,128 deaths.

According to a report by French agency AFP, the covid-19 pandemic has caused at least 3,432,711 deaths worldwide, resulting in more than 165 million infections.

The disease is transmitted by a new coronavirus discovered at the end of 2019 in Wuhan, a city in central China.
