Gap has drawn “camp shirts” that bear a striking resemblance to the striped clothes worn in Nazi concentration camps – with the webpage now reading, “This is highly sought after, it’s sold out.”
Pale blue and white cotton T-shirts are slammed on social media because they resemble the uniform worn at Auschwitz.
“So @Gap made white and gray striped shirts that reminded me of concentration camp uniforms before they even called them” Camp Shirts. “I don’t know if there’s anything I’m missing here, but this is very wrong for me,” tweeted @ninastoessinger.
Gap appeared at first to change the name from “camp shirt” to “striped shirt” in several online stores after a backlash.
On Friday, the shirt was no longer sold at Gap.com and Canadian brand website – but the black-and-white “camp shirt” is still available Friday on its UK website.
Gap still offers short-sleeved “shirt shirts” on its website, including other variations of the same black and white striped shirt in different prints.
A Gap representative told Fox News on Friday morning that the shirt was being pulled from its online store.
“We are very sorry for this surveillance,” the spokesman said said in the emailed statement. “It is not our intention to design shirts that can be interpreted or linked in this way, and as such are not consistent with the beliefs and values of our company. We respond immediately and delete items from our site. “
