Galp Gás Natural Distribuição (GGND) will inject clean hydrogen into the gas network as part of a pioneering experience in Portugal funded by the Foundation for the Support of Innovation (FAI).

The Green Gas Pipeline Project will cover 80 residential, tertiary and industrial consumers who will start receiving a mixture of natural gas and hydrogen from January 2022.

Initially, 2% of hydrogen will be injected into the natural gas network, and this percentage will gradually increase to a maximum of 20%, GGND explains, ensuring that the entire process will be “monitored and closely monitored by a team of experts. “.

“This is an important milestone for the national energy system as it facilitates the transition to a greener economy based on one of the most modern gas distribution networks in Europe,” said GGND CEO Gabriel Sousa, quoted in a statement following the project. a presentation event attended, inter alia, by the Deputy Secretary of State for Energy João Galamba.

Green hydrogen, a 100% renewable fuel, will be produced at the Seixal Industrial Park in the Setubal area through a partnership between GGND and the Portuguese company Gestene.

But there are several other partners from areas such as engineering and construction, as well as contributions from academia, public and private institutions, underlines GGND, which operates nine of the eleven gas distribution companies in Portugal with over 1.1 million active customers. …

In addition to funding, the FAI attributed the project an “exceptional merit” rating as it was “the result of an ambitious, pioneering and groundbreaking project” in Portugal that “aims to democratize access to a greener economy,” Bruno Veloso, a member of the fund’s executive committee, noted in statements reproduced in the same note.

In parallel, he stressed that “the results and knowledge gained from this project will become public domain, in particular for the benefit of all ‘stakeholders’, which is critical for the rapid growth of energy-gas projects and ensuring that public investment benefits everyone. “
