The statement was made on air on CNN, where he commented on the hearings of the parliamentary committee on the attack on the Capitol.

In response to a journalist’s assertion that the person responsible for the attack on the Capitol does not have to be “genius to attempt a coup,” John Bolton replied in a businesslike tone: “I disagree. As someone who helped plan the d’état coups, not here but outside, it takes a lot of work.”

Bolton further stated that the January 6, 2021 invasion was not Trump’s coup attempt, which “was just going from one idea to another”.

Known for his hawkish stance in diplomacy, Bolton, who served as the White House national security adviser in 2018 and was fired by the Republican president in September 2019, did not specify what kind of coups he was talking about.

However, he referred to Venezuela’s failed attempt to remove President Nicolas Maduro from power in 2019 by opposition leader Juan Guaidó backed by Washington.

Along with the neocons, John Bolton, also known for his tough stance on Iran, Afghanistan and North Korea, was one of the architects of the 2003 invasion of Iraq.
