Police sources said former Catalan President Carles Puigdemont was arrested Thursday in Sardinia by Italian police.

Police sources that Efe heard said Carles Puigdemont had been arrested by the Sardinian border police.

The former president of the Generalitat, who is also a member of the European Parliament, was arrested upon arrival in Alghero, a city in northwestern Sardinia, where he was to attend an event with Victoria Alsina, in charge of the Catalan Foreign Ministry. , and Laura Borras, President of the Catalan Parliament.

Former President Gonzalo Boye’s lawyer said Thursday night that Carles Puigdemont is “absolutely calm” because he trusts “the guarantees of the Union law.”

In an interview with TV3, the lawyer said that he spoke to Puigdemont several times and found that the former president was not worried about the situation.

The lawyer explained that this Friday the former president of Catalonia is expected to stand trial. Gonzalo Boi claimed that Carles Puigdemont was the victim of a “fraudulent arrest by the police.”
