Five police officers were injured and a 22-year-old man lost his arm during a police rally to break up an illegal party that drew 1,500 people in Brittany, France, local authorities said today.

The intervention brought together more than 400 agents who tried to prevent a party organized despite the 23:00 French curfew as part of the covid-19 pandemic.

“There was extreme violence for most of the night,” as the incidents lasted “more than seven hours,” said Emmanuel Berthier, president of the Ile-y-Vilaine department, in a statement.

“In this context of extreme violence, a 22-year-old boy lost an arm,” Berthier explained, adding that five police officers were injured, two of whom were taken to hospital.

The party was called to honor a young man who died in 2019 after falling into a river while fleeing the police for participating in an illegal party in the city of Nantes.

In addition to this incident in France, also on Friday night in Spain, police dispersed 4,700 people from various bars, streets and beaches in Barcelona, Spanish police said today.

However, this police operation, which usually takes place on weekends, went without incident.
