The former president of Brazil from 1995 to 2002, Fernando Henrique Cardoso (PSDB), turns 91 this Saturday (18 years old). The 34th president in Brazilian history, FHC was born in Rio de Janeiro in 1931. In addition to being the head of the Planalto Palace, he is also a sociologist, political scientist and university professor.

In addition to the presidency, the toucan also served as a senator for São Paulo between 1983 and 1992. In the government of Itamar Franco, the FHC was Minister of Foreign Affairs and Minister of Finance. Since leaving the presidency, replaced by Luis Inácio Lula da Silva (Portugal) in 2003, he has not run for other political office.

Tucan’s management became famous for privatizing highways, state-owned banks, telephone and energy companies. Among the major companies privatized during the FHC’s tenure are Vale do Rio Doce and Telebrás. Other important milestones were the maintenance of Plano Real, begun during the reign of Itamar Franco, the control of hyperinflation, and the creation of social programs such as the school subsidy, the gas voucher, and the food subsidy.

On social media, important PSDB members congratulated Fernando Enrique Cardoso on his birthday. O federal deputy from the state of Minas Gerais Esio Neves, stated that the FHC spearheaded “the most important reforms that have taken place in recent decades”. “May God continue to illuminate and bless your journey,” Neves wrote. The former governor of Sao Paulo, Joao Doria, confirmed the speech of the Minas Gerais parliamentarian.

Doria what withdrew his candidacy for Plateau this year, said the FHC left “a legacy of economic growth and inflation control.” OUR provisional presidential candidate of the Republic Simone Tebet (MDB) praised the toucan, who for her is “a great leader with a trajectory of life and politics that exemplifies.”
