Fabio Carvalho retires from under-21s

On Monday, the Liverpool player submitted his resignation from the national under-21 team, the FPF said in a statement.

After being called up by Rui Jorge to the under-21 squad for the friendly matches against the Czech Republic and Japan, Fabio Carvalho, as expected, did not show up in Lagos to join the quinas team.

The FPF said in a statement that the Liverpool player, who already represented England in the youth team but chose to represent Portugal, was in the UEFA European Under-21 Championship qualifying round in which he played four games. said he was resigned to the choice of this step.

“Fabio Carvalho has informed the Portuguese Football Federation via several SMS messages that he does not intend to continue to represent Portugal at under-21 level. Japan,” the statement said.

Matches against the Czech Republic and Japan in preparation for the 2023 Under-21 Championship are scheduled for 18 and 22 November respectively.

Portugal are in Group A of the final round of the European Championship against hosts Georgia (June 21), the Netherlands (24) and Belgium (27). The top two teams from each of the four groups advance to the quarterfinals.
