Portugal’s participation in Expo Dubai in the United Arab Emirates signifies “Portugal’s return to the logic of systematic participation in international exhibitions,” Foreign Minister Augusto Santos Silva said earlier this week.

“We hope this participation will be successful,” the minister said during the presentation of the Portuguese program at the world exhibition last Monday.

Pavilion de Portugal with the inscription “Portugal, peace in the country” has an area of 1800 square meters, where there is no shortage of Portuguese sidewalk, chairs and cork lamps, tiles, a terrace with olive trees and the concept of a store ”, which aims to become an“ embassy ”for promoting Portuguese brands and products, offering over 170 unique products.

The caravel-inspired pavilion is the result of a partnership between Grupo Casais and Studio Saraiva + Associados and is located in the Expo Sustainable Development Area, one of three thematic zones.

One of the highlights will be Dia de Portugal on January 14th, with flag raising and anthem, Teresa Salgueiro’s musical performance at the Al Wasl Plaza, and an official visit to Pavillan. de Portugal, where the performance of the drum group Retimbrar will take place.

Expo Dubai, which ends on March 31, 2022, will be the first major mega-event since the start of the pandemic, expected by 25 million visitors.

It brings together over 200 members, including 192 countries, as well as multilateral organizations, companies and educational institutions for 182 days.

Located in the south of Dubai, the area is 4.38 square kilometers, of which about two square kilometers are closed areas.

According to the organization, the “heart” of the exhibition is the Al-Wasl square (which means connection) with a dome 130 meters wide and 67.5 meters high, which covers an area of 724,000 cubic meters. This corresponds to the volume of nearly 300 Olympic pools – and above the Leaning Tower of Pisa.

The project consists of 13.6 km of steel, equivalent to the height of 16 Burj Khalifa (the tallest tower in the world, 828 meters high, located in Dubai), weighs 2,544 tons, like 25 blue whales, and is almost two wide. Airbus A380 lined up wing to wing.

The three thematic areas of Expo 2020 – Opportunity, Mobility and Sustainability – are presented as petals that converge on Al Wasl Square.

For example, the sustainable pavilion Terra is powered by photovoltaic panels – 4,912 of which are located at the top of a 130-meter-wide roof and at the top of 18 so-called “energy trees” in the vicinity.

The size of these “trees” ranges from 10 to 15.2 meters.
