As expected, the European Union has made it mandatory to use a universal connection, in this case the USB-C interface, for all small and medium-sized portable electronic equipment, i.e. phones, smartphones, tablets and headphones sold in Europe. countries as early as 2024.
There is also a list of add-on devices, 20 in total, which includes devices such as e-readers, handheld game consoles, and cameras, which will also need to take this measure. Notebooks will have a longer range for this measure, with a maximum of 40 months (just over three years).
The adoption of this law reduces the losses caused by the creation and use of various types of chargers, whenever the user purchases new equipment. Through this law, the European Union hopes that European consumers will be able to save up to 250 million euros per year on the purchase of new chargers and reduce e-waste by 11,000 tons per year in chargers that are no longer in use.
For some manufacturers, this measure does not entail any changes, since almost all smartphone and tablet manufacturers have switched to a USB-C connection, but the same cannot be said for Apple, which continues to use the universal interface of its mobile devices as a Lightning link. .
There is a suspicion that the new iPhone 14, which is due out in October, will still use this connection, but the next generation should already implement USB-C as a universal interface.
