Relations between European leaders and Zelenskiy have been strained in recent months. The Ukrainian leader accuses them of not having a strong position on Russia. But this Thursday, the four received important support: Ukraine was granted “immediate” status as an official candidate for European Union (EU) membership.
“We support the status of four immediate candidates for membership“, – said French President Emmanuel Macron, adding that “this statute will be accompanied by leadership and will take into account the situation in the Balkans and in the neighborhood, in particular in Moldova.”
The French leader also assured Zelensky that “Europe is on your side. It will stay that way for as long as it needs to be.”
