American businessman Elon Musk said today that he would lift former President Donald Trump’s indefinite ban on Twitter if he bought the social network, for which he offered about 41 billion euros.

“(…) I would cancel the indefinite exile,” said Elon Musk, speaking via videoconference at a summit on the future of cars, organized by the British newspaper Financial Times.

The businessman argued that Trump’s ban on Twitter was a “morally bad decision” and “grossly unwise,” saying permanent deletion of Twitter accounts should be rare and meant for fraudulent accounts or automated “bots.”

Twitter suspended the former US head of state’s account in January 2021 for “inciting violence” following the invasion of the US Capitol on the 6th of that month.

“I think it was a mistake because it alienated a lot of the country and didn’t lead to silencing Donald Trump,” Elon Musk said, adding that “it could have ended frankly worse than having a single forum where everyone can discuss.

Elon Musk recalled that his opinion about permanent expulsion is shared by co-founder and former CEO of Twitter Jack Dorsey.

Trump has previously said he does not intend to return to the social network even if his account is reactivated, telling the conservative US television channel Fox News in April that he will focus on his service (Truth Social), which he showed. since launch in early 2022

“I won’t be on Twitter. I will be in the Truth,” the former US president told Fox News.

“I hope Elon buys Twitter because he is going to improve things and he is a good person, but I stay with Truth,” he added.

A spokesman for Trump, who was contacted by the AP news agency, did not respond to a request for comment on Musk’s remarks.
