With his political rights suspended until 2027, Eduardo Cunha (MDB-RJ) is trying to turn his tide in court to return to a party dispute. The politician’s plan is to leave his political stronghold in Rio de Janeiro and become a federal deputy in Sao Paulo.
He talked about it on Monday (25) when he signed an autograph night for the book Bye Darling, in which he depicts the behind-the-scenes events of the impeachment trial of former President Dilma Rousseff (PT). At the time, he was president of the Chamber of Deputies, hence he was responsible for publishing the process in Congress. After that, his term was canceled for violating parliamentary decency on charges of lying about the existence of accounts abroad.
Five years later, when there were few people at the autograph party, Cunha told Folla de São Paulo that he had no intention of turning the moment into an event. “It’s more like putting me on.” (…) “Since I am going to be a candidate, the fact that I am going to run in São Paulo symbolizes my presence,” he explained to the newspaper. He is due to hold another session in Rio de Janeiro, in addition to planning the release of a second book, Querida, voltai, about his return to the political scene.
As for the candidacy, the former deputy says that he still does not know which party he will run from. His daughter, who is also expected to compete for a seat in the Chamber of Deputies, but in Rio de Janeiro, will leave MDB.
