Marcia Bassetto Paez was a history student at USP from 1976 until 1979, when she closed her enrollment but retained her connection to the university. He joined the Workers’ League, a Trotskyist organization founded in 1972, to organize politically and have more theoretical grounds for his militancy. On April 28, 1977, she and two other members of the organization, Celso Brambilla and José María de Almeida, planned to distribute pamphlets with slogans “against hunger” and “restoration of democratic freedoms” among factory workers at ABC Paulista, due to the Labor Day holiday, 1 May. However, at dawn, the three were approached and arrested by the military police. “We were brutally handcuffed and placed in a van ‘cage’ and then taken to the police station in Maua city,” says Marcia in volume 9 of the Final Report of the USP Truth Commission.
After passing through a police station, the three were taken to the State Department of Political and Social Order (Deops) building in central Sao Paulo, where they were arrested and tortured for several days. In her testimony to the commission, Marcia recounts the time she was escorted out of the building by two civilian police officers codenamed Ronnie Vaughn and Capeta. She was taken to a road outside the city limits and beaten by the police, who were interrupted by a voice over the car’s radio transmitter ordering the police to return “with live fish”. Returning to Deops, after ten days without contact with the outside world, Marcia and her companions underwent a course of treatment to cover up the signs of torture.
On June 16, Marcia was transferred to Karandiru Prison, where she remained until her pre-trial detention was released on July 21. On November 29, the charges were dismissed, and she, along with her associates, was acquitted.
