The former Minneapolis police convicted of murder and massacre in the death of George Floyd has been transferred to a maximum security prison, according to a report.

Derek Chauvin – who was captured in the video with his knee pinned to Floyd’s neck for almost nine minutes, was initially held in the Ramsey Regional Prison before being transferred Sunday afternoon to the Hennepin District Prison, KSTP reports.

Since then he has been sent to the Minnesota Penitentiary – Oak Park Heights in Stillwater, the news agency reported, citing the state’s Corrections Department.

“Oak Park Heights is the highest prisoner level in the Minnesota DOC system. However, most of the detainees detained here are maximum and close prisoners, because some prisoners need a higher level of security, ” according to DOC.

DOC Commissioner Paul Schnell told a news conference late Sunday that this kind of transfer was unusual, adding that the same thing happened when former Minneapolis police officer Mohamed Noor was arrested in the murder of Justine Damond.

The Hennepin County Sheriff, David Hutchinson, requested the Chauvin transfer, Schnell said.

Chauvin, who had been fired along with three other policemen, was charged with third-degree murder and murder on Friday.

Three other former officers have not been charged in this case.
