The death of David Sassoli prompted some Italians to pay tribute to their compatriot in the presence of a European Parliament delegation in Rome.

Before entering politics, Sassoli was already a well-known figure in Italy as a presenter on state television RAI, where he became the linchpin of the mainstream news program.

“I remember him as a news anchor. Then, of course, I saw that he became the President of the European Parliament. He was a good man,” the Italian summed up the special representative of Euronews in Rome.

Sergio Cantone accompanied Rome’s “sweet, melancholy and final” farewell to the famous journalist “who became a politician under the sign of discretion”. “By prudence we mean the spirit of service and dialogue,” emphasizes our journalist.

There is a growing desire in the streets of the Italian capital for sobriety and ideas to become important again in politics, which seems to be losing strength with the death of Sassoli.

“His ideas were clear. For me and for many others, he was an example of a way of life in everyday life, always in search of true values, strong values of the human and social community,” said the Italian.

For another Italian who spoke to Euronews on the streets of Rome, “it would be better to have a little more kindness in dealing with people.” He did not deserve such an ending, mainly because it came too early, ”complained our interlocutor.

In the midst of the Covid-19 pandemic, David Sassoli contracted pneumonia in September and shortly thereafter had a relapse of the cancer problem that had plagued him for years and put him at risk for SARS-CoV-2.

He was out of work for two months, but returned to the European Parliament at the end of December. He again had a relapse, he was hospitalized, but he could not stand it. He died Tuesday in hospital, a victim of immune system dysfunction.
