In an interview with CNNChristopher Garman, political scientist and executive director for America of the Eurasian Group, said that despite the big crisis between President Jair Bolsonaro (no party) and other powers, perhaps not positive, it is not a threat to Brazilian democracy.

“All this noise that we are seeing, this struggle between the president and the supreme, is, in fact, a sign that the institutional structure of Brazil is strong. The President is very limited in his actions; we have a system with many weights and opposition. “I don’t think democracy is in danger,” the expert said.

The meeting between STF President Luis Fuchs and the Chief Minister of the Civic Chamber Ciro Nogueira this Wednesday (18) was an attempt to defuse the institutional crisis. Last weekend, Bolsonaro even announced that he would send an impeachment order to the Senate to Ministers Alexandre de Moares and Luis Roberto Barroso.

According to Garman, Bolsonaro’s actions against the judiciary are related not so much to challenging decisions as to election rhetoric. “The president will emerge from the Covid-19 pandemic weakened and fuel his base with this polarizing rhetoric,” he explained.
