Covid-19: WHO says it is morally and technically wrong to administer additional doses of vaccines

“This is technically wrong and morally wrong,” said WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus during a regular press video conference on the evolution of the covid-19 pandemic, which was broadcast from headquarters in Geneva, Switzerland.

According to Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, it is morally wrong that countries are pushing for increased vaccination when others, the poorest, have not yet vaccinated their populations due to lack of vaccines. On the other hand, strengthening the vaccine with additional doses, in his opinion, is technically wrong, because without vaccination of “a significant part of the world’s population” the new coronavirus is given “the opportunity to circulate”, which contributes to the “emergence”. new variants that may be more potent than Delta – currently the most infectious of all circulating – and avoid the protection afforded by current vaccines.

“Booster doses will not help us recover from the pandemic,” he said, reiterating that WHO has called for a temporary moratorium on additional doses so that the poorest countries can vaccinate their populations.

The head of WHO recalled that there is still no “convincing data” about the “benefits and safety” of taking additional doses of the covid-19 vaccine.
