14h02 – Another death and 334 new confirmed cases in Portugal.

Portugal recorded another death and 334 new cases in the past 24 hours. There were still 229 cases cured.

In total, 17,007 deaths and 842,182 cases of the disease have been registered in the country since the beginning of the pandemic, of which 802,900 have already been registered as recovered.

There are currently 22,275 active cases reported.

As for hospitalizations, there has been a significant increase: another 22 people were hospitalized in the ward, and five more in intensive care.

At the moment, 245 people are hospitalized in the ward, and 76 people are in intensive care.

12:43 – At least 3.37 million deaths in the world

The Covid-19 pandemic has already killed at least 3,371,695 people worldwide since it began in late December 2019 in China, according to a report compiled today by France-Presse (AFP).

Globally, more than 162,422,800 infections were officially diagnosed, with an additional 11,923 deaths and 641,818 new cases on Saturday.

According to the AFP news agency, the vast majority of patients recover from the COVID-19 disease caused by SARS-CoV-2, but a subset of these people still report some associated symptoms for weeks or even months.

The countries with the most deaths in their latest reports are India (another 4,077 deaths), Brazil (2,087) and Colombia (530).

According to estimates from Johns Hopkins University, the United States is the country hardest hit in terms of both deaths (585,708) and cases (32,924,303).

12:00 – 129 thousand vaccinations on Saturday

According to final figures on Saturday, May 15, about 106,700 teachers, non-teachers and social workers were vaccinated, for a total of more than 129,000 vaccinations daily.


According to preliminary information released on Saturday by the task force that coordinates the vaccination program, 125,000 Covid-19 vaccines were administered in Portugal on Saturday, already setting a new daily record in the country.

However, as of 11:00 am today, more than 18,600 teachers, non-teachers and social workers have been vaccinated, for a total of more than 22,600 vaccinations.

11:45 am – Two INEM teams arrive in Cape Verde today.

Today, two doctors and four nurses from INEM are arriving in Cape Verde, where they will strengthen the Covid-19 response capacity at central hospitals located on the islands of Santiago and São Vicente.

According to the Portuguese Ministry of Foreign Affairs, these are two teams that will operate at the central hospitals in Praia, on the island of Santiago, and in Mindelo, in São Vicente.

The teams are coordinated by the National Institute for Emergency Medicine (INEM) through the Portuguese Ambulance Team (PT EMT) following a Portuguese assessment mission that was in that country from 5 to 12 May.

“This mission worked closely with the health authorities of Cape Verde, the cities of Praia and Mindelo,” the statement said.

10:21 – 271 more people died in Africa in 24 hours

The African continent has recorded 271 Covid-19-related deaths in the past 24 hours, representing 125,930 deaths since the start of the pandemic.

According to the African Union Center for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC), the total number of cases in the region is 4,678,473, with an additional 7,334 cases reported in the last 24 hours.

As for the recovered, out of 7,230 registered in the last 24 hours, their total number is 4,233,510.

9:45 am – More than half of the people who have lost family members are at risk of a long break


Preliminary results from a study on bereavement during a pandemic conducted by Portuguese researchers show that 58 percent of people who lost family members during the covid-19 pandemic are at risk for long-term grief disorder (PLP).

A group of researchers from four Portuguese universities is conducting a national study on the impact on the loss of restrictive measures during the first emergency due to the Covid-19 pandemic, and now intend to include more recent data in this analysis.

The study is being conducted by researchers from the University of Lisbon, Coimbra, Minho, Luciada de Lisbon University and from the Gaia and Espinho / Gaia health center groups.

9h28 – German experts believe a third dose of vaccine will be required

German health authorities admit that a third dose of the new coronavirus vaccine will be required next year, as some manufacturers have already indicated.

In an interview published this Sunday by the Funke group press, the chairman of the German Permanent Vaccination Commission (Stiko) Thomas Mertens warned that the current Covid-19 vaccines “will not be the last.”

“In principle, we must prepare ourselves so that, probably, next year we all have to renew our immune defenses,” he admitted.

However, Germany has not yet made any decision on this matter and is awaiting immune studies, which are being carried out among the already vaccinated population.

8:21 a.m. – China detects four cases of local contamination.

The National Health Commission said four new local cases of Covid-19 infection were reported in China’s Liaoning province (northeast) on Saturday.

Two local cases have already been reported in this province the day before. In Anhui province, where two local infections were detected on Thursday – for the first time in the country in more than three weeks – and three on Friday, no new cases were reported on Saturday.

Since Thursday, authorities have restricted the movement of residents in the affected areas and are conducting massive nucleic acid tests. In addition, 14 imported cases were reported in the Asian country on Saturday.

8:00 – Portugal has a daily record of 125,000 vaccinated people.
