Two days after the assassination of Marcelo de Arruda in Foz do Iguaçu (PR), the Belo Horizonte city council opposed bill 78/2021, which established Mariel Franco Day to combat political violence.

The project, sponsored by Bella Gonçalves and Isa Lawrence of Psola, aims to expand the debate about democracy in the state capital of Minas Gerais. “The problem of political violence in Brazil is historical and has structural roots reflected in our society. Of the 40 parliamentarians, 26 voted against the proposal, including advisers from Bolsonaro’s (LP) and Romeu Zema’s (Novo) parties. The remaining 14 deputies voted in favour.
