Citigroup, one of the largest banking structures in the United States, will lay off at the end of the month employees who have not been vaccinated against covid-19 who do not provide a justification, several American media reported.

According to an internal document released this Friday, the banking institution set January 14 as the deadline for vaccinations or exemptions for religious, medical or legal reasons, EFE reported.

Anyone who is not vaccinated and does not provide justification will be suspended from work without pay from January 15 and will be formally fired at the end of the month, according to a document that was circulated to workers.

A bank source quoted by The New York Times said more than 90% of Citigroup’s roughly 65,000 US employees are already vaccinated.

Citigroup, the third-largest US bank, is the first major financial institution to show intent to fire anyone who has not been vaccinated.

The bank already announced in October that it would require all employees to be vaccinated, based on an administration order led by Joe Biden that requires employees hired by the government to be vaccinated.

However, Citigroup did not say at the time that it would decide to fire the unvaccinated.
