UThe suspect in two murders that caught the attention of China and drew an unusual wave of sympathy from the Chinese population passed away this Monday after fleeing authorities for a week, CNN reported.

Or Jinzhong, who was accused of killing two neighbors and injuring three others, including a nine-year-old child, in Fujian Province will commit suicide by resisting arrest, police in Putian City said in a message.

Over the course of a week, hundreds of police officers searched 55-year-old Ou Jinzhong in the hills near the village where he lived. This week they found him in a cave and surrounded him.

The search has attracted the attention of millions of people in China. Ou Jinzhong’s murders stemmed from a long dispute with neighbors who would not allow him to build a house, forcing Ou and his family to live in a small hut.

Many believe that the man was driven to despair, which aroused sympathy among the Chinese people, which is rare in a country where murder is punishable by death.

Empathy for Ou increased when it became known that about 30 years ago he saved a drowning child, and in 2008 he saved two dolphins that almost got stranded.

After Ou Jinzhong’s death statement was released by the police, many people wrote on Weibo that they were not convinced of the official version of the suicide announced by the police and asked the authorities to post videos of his arrest.
