The Chinese embassies in Belgium, Russia, Egypt and Peru have issued similar statements, introducing quarantine in the country of origin, to which is added another quarantine upon arrival in China, lasting at least 14 days.

China, like other countries, already requires everyone traveling from abroad to go through a quarantine period upon arrival, but mandatory quarantine before landing is an unprecedented requirement.

“All personnel of companies with Chinese capital must be quarantined in 21 days and provide quarantine certificates with the stamp of the respective companies,” said a statement published on the official website of the Chinese Embassy in Lisbon.

“Creeps that have landed in Portugal and intend to travel to China must be quarantined in Portugal for at least 14 days, and quarantine certificates must be issued by airlines,” added in the same note.

As for Portugal, the only direct flight to China operated by Beijing Capital Airlines is for the Chinese city of Xi’an, which requires 21 days of quarantine for arrivals from overseas at a hotel designated by the authorities and another seven days later at their place of residence in China.

Passengers must also present a certificate of vaccination or a negative antigen test result. In addition to one of these two certificates, the passenger must present negative results of the PCR nucleic acid and IgM antibody tests.

There is one flight per week between Lisbon and Sian.

Beijing Capital Airlines also temporarily suspended flights for passengers in transit to China via Lisbon from South Africa, Brazil, India, Nepal, Great Britain, Angola, Mozambique, Italy and Spain.
