The man who killed his ex-wife with fire while recording a video for the social network Tik Tok was sentenced to death by Chinese justice on Thursday.

The woman was Amuchu, a digital influencer of Tibetan nationality. At the age of 30, she had thousands of followers on the social network Douyin, the Chinese equivalent of Tik Tok, and entertained people with videos of walking, cooking and singing dressed in traditional Tibetan costumes.

Everything seemed to go well. Last September, during a live broadcast on Tik Tok, her ex-husband doused Amucha with gasoline, which then set her on fire.

The digital influencer did not resist his injuries after a two-week hospital stay.

Amuchu broke up with her husband three months before her death because of his violent behavior.

The crime sparked outrage in China, opening the door for debate about violence against women in that country.

“This crime was extremely brutal and the impact it had on our society was terrible!” – said in a statement by the court, which added that the man will be sentenced to death for premeditated murder.

The influencer’s death mobilized millions of internet users to demand justice for Amuchu on social media using a hashtag that was later censored by the Chinese authorities.

It wasn’t until 2016 that the communist regime in China began to punish domestic violence. According to a study published by the Chinese Women’s Federation in 2013, one in four Chinese women have experienced this type of violence in their lifetime.

China recently amended its divorce law by introducing a month-long waiting period before allowing divorce as the regime wants to fight impulsive divorces.

The reform has been criticized because many believe it entails the possibility of victims falling into the hands of abusive spouses.
