At least 11 municipalities in Bahia, Sergipe and Pernambuco recorded a meteor pass this Thursday (18th). The recordings were made in the municipalities of the state of Bahia Iguay, Ireca, Curasa, Seabra, El Salvador, Paulo Afonso and Feira de Santana. Cameras also captured the phenomenon in three Sergipe towns: Aracaju, San Crisovan and Monte Alegre de Sergipe, in addition to Santa Maria da Boa Vista in the state of Pernambuco.

According to Marcelo Zurita, astronomer and director of the Brazilian Meteorological Observing Network (Bramon), asteroids, meteors and comets revolve around the Sun at very high speeds, ranging from 40,000 to 266,000 kilometers per hour.

“When they reach Earth’s atmosphere at this speed, even debris the size of a grain of sand can instantly heat atmospheric gases, creating a luminous phenomenon called a meteor. So, a meteor is just a luminous phenomenon, nothing more. The meteor is not solid, neither liquid nor gas, it is just light. People also call a meteor a shooting star, ”the astronomer explains.

Generally speaking, astronomers say that the larger the object, the brighter the meteor. And when its luminosity exceeds that of Venus, the meteor is usually called a fireball or fireball. Sometimes, also depending on the speed and angle of entry, a meteoroid or asteroid is large enough to reach the densest layers of the atmosphere. In these cases, in addition to forming a more impressive fireball, the meteor usually ends in an explosion. This type of meteorite is also called a fireball.
